AB+ZU offers expertise to clients looking for residential and commercial interior design, restaurant and hospitality consultation, and branding strategies.
The Homewood Project
Our most recent project involved remodeling a downtown East End condo. The clients wanted a sophisticated transformation for their split bi-level unit, envisioning a smoky city feel with deep woods and rich tones. We incorporated these elements to create a modern yet warm atmosphere.. The result is a stunning condo that perfectly reflects the clients' refined taste.
The Malden Project
The Malden project is close to our hearts, as it's not only our first showcase here but also our home. This ongoing endeavour allows us to apply our building knowledge to client projects and understand the passion and patience required for such a significant renovation.
AB+ZU transformed a small log cabin into a spacious, stylish retreat by customizing the floorplan, optimizing lake views, and using a rich palette of natural materials for a sophisticated, minimal aesthetic.
Pickering Home
This family project maximizes storage and durability on a tight budget with IKEA millwork and carefully chosen tiles. Highlights include terracotta tiles in the kitchen, practical black-and-white basics in the kids' bathroom, a spa-like ensuite, and sustainable zellige tiles in the laundry room.
With over 15 years of operational knowledge running restaurants, bars, events, market stands and boutiques, AB+ZU transforms commercial spaces into engaging social hubs of both functionality and beauty. As previous restaurant operators we understand the pressure owners have managing commercial ventures in today’s climate. Therefore AB+ZU helps businesses maximise the existing qualities and strengths of their space or transforms them to be the design driven work horses that they, their clients, and staff deserve. AB+ZU will then develop the design, create construction documents, coordinate with contractors, and supervise the installation.
AB+ZU specialises in modern renovations, architectural make-overs, and compelling interior design. We focus on exemplary space-planning by working methodically to ensure all options, ideas, and potential pit-falls have been analysed and managed. We work closely not only with our clients, but also with architects, developers, and trades to guide and manage projects from onset to completion.
Whether you have an existing idea, but are hesitant to act, or you require a team to build your space from the ground up we are able to assist. AB+ZU delivers modern results that exceed the client’s expectations and most importantly make living, working, and entertaining in your home rewarding.
What our clients say !
Vikram _ Log Home Project
Thorough professionals, great quality of work, and a phenomenal eye for detail! Kyla completely transformed our cottage - right from maximizing living space on the main floor to minute details for getting the most out of our closet space. Would highly recommend this team for small or large renovation projects as well as new builds.

We were very fortunate to have the assistance of Kyla of Aunt Benny Design in completing our house renovation in 2021. We were able to consistently rely on Kyla's expertise and support for the entirety of the renovation from conceptualization to completion, a period of about 11 months. From the outset, Kyla provided structure to the project and helped us to pull together the various aspects of the renovation into a coherent design plan. Kyla listened attentively to our ideas, parameters and limitations and made every effort to incorporate them into her work. At the same time Kyla contributed some great ideas and creativity and brought a sense of vision to the project. On a number of occasions Kyla helped us to think 'outside the box' with some very pleasing results! In short Kyla introduced the 'Wow' factor which would not have been there to the same extent without her input.
Greg & Jeff _ Homewood
We hired Kyla at AB+ZU to design the renovation of our urban split-level condo and to help transform it into a modern but warm retreat. From the discovery call with Kyla and Jeremy through to the design process, Kyla’s design sensibilities and her approachable style made it easy for us to land on a plan that met our needs. Kyla was great at suggesting enough options — without overwhelming us with endless choices — and worked within the boundaries of a budget, even when that took some creative ‘hacks’ to make the best use of solutions that ended up working beautifully. We are thrilled with how the project turned out!
AB + ZU : German for “to and from” , “here and there” , “sometimes” , and “occasional”.
AB+ZU believes that good design comes from the collection of experiences. Having an understanding of different places and cultures from the past and the present informs our understanding of how people experience the spaces they’re in. AB+ZU looks to the past, the present, and the future to create engaging spaces which reference the familiar to evoke feelings anew.
Having relocated from Berlin and now based in Toronto AB+ZU is a design studio run by husband and wife team Kyla Boyle and Jeremy Caulfield. As an interior designer, Kyla was brought to Berlin with the attraction of rebuilding a formally broken city, rich with history and culture. She opened Aunt Benny cafe as a place to showcase her work. The business grew to multiple entities in the hospitality field, as well and offering interior design services, event planning, and restaurant consultation. Jeremy’s career as a graphic designer, record label owner, dj, and producer brought him to Berlin and its club scene. From there he was able to travel the world many times over bring back stories, art, recipes, and a wealth of information about people and places he visited.
AB+ZU offers this expertise to clients looking for residential and commercial interior design, restaurant and hospitality consultation, and branding strategies.
TOP PICKS
Having lived in Berlin in the early aughts, we were incredibly grateful for the invention on-line shopping. There was not much for brick and mortar back then, especially in the former East. Ebay was our first obsession and without it we wouldn’t have been able to decorate our home or business. Although it is now commonplace for most, we are still scouring the net for good deals, rare finds, design classics, and just useful, well designed stuff. Here are our top picks!

I really don’t want standard stock doors and trim. Much of our work as designers consists of helping clients select the finishes for their new builds: doors and trim, hardware, millwork, flooring, tiles, plumbing, and lighting plans.
